He gained certificates through the City and Guild of London Institute Incorporated by the Royal Charter before embarking on a 27 year career in the electrical motor industry with Dowding & Mills. This career took Ivan and his family from London to the cold beauty of Canada before making their final stop in sunny Brisbane in 1988.
